(to the tune of Hark The Herald Angels Sing) Hark the Filks and Drabbles Ring... Christmas time is here to sing! And how else to celebrate Than filks and drabbles to create? One hundred words, not too long Rearrange words of a song Share all of holiday mirth! Give some drabbles and filks birth! Harry Potter, else run wild Gladly we shall them compile. Now that Halloween has disappeared over the horizon, it's time to bring out the light-hearted holiday spirit in all of us. A drabble - 100 words is the official length, but (as I well know) it's a hard line to toe, so some leeway is allowed. The subject should be some wintery activity. It doesn't have to be specific holiday-themed, or Christmas-themed. I personally am fond of the idea that Asteria Greengrass is from a Jewish family, so what would Draco's first Hanukah be like? Does Dean Thomas celebrate Kwanzaa with his family during the war? Did Lavendar Brown get invited to celebrate the end of Ramadan with Parvati and Padma Patil (hey, they could be Muslim, and Ramadan can coincide with Christmas). Even a New Year's Party at the Three Broomsticks has scope for the imagination. Go for as many drabbles as you like, in as wide a range of subjects as you like - just remember, this is a family-friendly board here. And as for filks, Christmas carols set to a Harry Potter taste would be most excellent... I shall be posting a (finished) epic retelling of "Good King Wenceslas" as soon as I finish it. They don't necessarily have to involve the holidays, but hey, it's hard to disassociate them. In particular, anyone who can give us a bit more of Sirius' favorite carol, the so-tantalizing "God Rest Ye Merry Hippogriffs," will get a treat of a free butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks. Fun, Queenie! The filks don't have to be book specific, but they can be if you want them to, and in some cases it might help to specify a context. (Random, PS/SS, OoTP, etc.) Also, I figure everyone can reply here, but be sure to quote at least a bit of the filk so we know who you're talking to.  |

The Christmas Wish
He’d first seen them when he was little. Well, when he was littler than he was now, he hadn’t ever really been little. They were amazing! They had soared through the sky pulling that sleigh with the little fat man in it! He asked his Da for one, but was told Muggles might see it and the Ministry couldn’t allow that. Still, his heart was set. He’d have to go over his father’s head!

You beat me to this one Queenie and took the words I wanted to post. I loved the vision of Santa Claus, the voice you gave little Hagrid, his relationship with his dad, but most of all I loved his letter. Hagrid's love has started early. Of course he would take good care of it.

With the huge drop to unforgiving rocky crags relentlessly pounded by an angry ocean, there was little concern for escapees. The despair this instilled was actually a side benefit for their guards, which an awareness of “The Holidays” only accentuated. Though most prisoners were too far gone to supply such a delicacy, the Dementors excitedly swarmed near cell doors of those who did ache for times past.
As Padfoot curled into the oblivion of sleep, the Dementors drifted away.

MWPP: I loved seeing the Hagrid drabble and the Dementors drabble was delicious - just a brilliant take on Christmas at Azkaban. silent speaker: Very funny take on that song though I'm afraid I will never be able to hear the original in quite the same way again. 
Somehow my plan to write about Draco's first Hanukkah turned into Scorpius' first Hanukkah! This is actually a pared-down version as my drabble somehow grew to 350+ words. The First Hanukkah“All white looks better, yes?” Asteria had spent the last fifteen minutes fussing over which colors to use before returning to her original plan of all white candles. “Yes, and when you ask me again in fifteen minutes, I will have the same answer.” “I just want everything to be perfect.” “And it will be. Scorpius will cherish these memories for the rest of his life.” Though he was still far too young to recognize his name, their eight-week-old son stirred in his bassinet. “Fine.” “Asteria, unclench. It's just the three of us. And one of us only has the foggiest idea of what is happening and the other is barely two months old.” He kissed his wife's cheek. “You have several nights to make this as perfect as you want it to be.”

Another Christmas morning Standing alone in the room, he allowed himself a moment to wallow in self-pity, trying to imagine how a lifetime of Christmas mornings might have felt if not for Voldemort. A cheerful home with loving parents . . . possibly even brothers and sisters. Gaily wrapped gifts under sparkling trees. Joy and laughter. Truly magical holidays. Eyes moist, he opened his fist and stared at the piece of crumpled paper. Falling to his knees, he slid a worn cardboard box from under his bed. After smoothing the scrap with tender care, Neville added his mum's latest offering to the hoard of worthless treasures. |

Harry replied, deadpan, “It certainly appears that I am.”
James rolled his eyes. “C’mon. What if someone sees them? Granted, we‘re only going to Papa and Nana Weasley‘s, but really Dad….”
“Ginny,” Harry called. “Do you see anything wrong with these socks?”
Bustling through the room, she shrugged, “Looks like Christmas to me.”
“Mom!’ bleated James, following her exasperated.
Harry grinned at the red sock covered in broomsticks, and its mate, the green snitch-pattered one. “Thank you for everything, Dobby. Merry Christmas!”

Post as much as you like - that's this thread is for! I especially love the Hagrid one you wrote, because he's such an overlooked character. And it's so adorable and fitting that he asked for a Reindeer. birdg: I liked seeing Draco being affectionate towards his family. He may not be nice to most people, but his family sees a softer side. dancingpony: That was brilliantly written. I like how you leave it a little ambiguous at first, and how you tie in the bubble gum wrapper. |

Because I can't write succintly to save my life... I present 212 words:
Thanksgiving
Thankful Winthrop, of the Plymouth colony, had much to be grateful for. The hungry times seemed past. The feast that had her family so excited was sure to be delicious. However, Thankful sometimes exhibited odd bursts of a gift she couldn’t explain. She made the water in the pot boil. She had briefly recruited a wild fox to keep the crows away while she was seeding the garden. None of the other eight-year-old girls she knew could do this.
With this much gratitude, Thankful attended the feast with the other women and girls, Puritans and Natives. Mother sat her next to a slightly older Native girl who smiled at her. After the feast, the children separated off to their usual groups, but Thankful took her new friend aside to show off her little herb garden. At one point she turned away. She turned back to find her new friend watering the plants from the well – without the use of a watering can. The water dropped when Thankful gasped, and for a moment they simply stared at each other.
Then the Native girl had smiled.
Soon, Thankful had two more things for which to be thankful: a true friend, and a teacher for clandestine lessons in the magic of the Wampanoag tradition.

This is a filk I began, but never finished, on Sugar Quill, and now that the holidays are closing in on us, I felt it appropriate to do a little reprise. I'll post it in installments, and most certainly finish it this time!
